American Civil War army lists for Rank & File
The following list allows for some very basic armies to be put together using the Rank & File rules for either Confederate or Union forces. Players are encouraged to research the specific period or campaign they are playing and adjust their armies accordingly. For example, many units, particularly Confederacy ones, still used out-dated smoothbore muskets.
Each army has 1 General costing 60 points (+ 2 bonus to morale and 2 Rerolls) and 2-4 Infantry Brigades.
Each Brigade is commanded by a Brigadier costing 40 points (+1 bonus to moral and 1 reroll) and consists of 2 to 5 Battalions.
Each Battalion consists of 4 to 6 stands of Regular Infantry with Rifled Musket at a cost of 31 points per stand. The following upgrades may be made:
• Up to 2 Battalions may be Veterans and cost 36 points per stand.
• Up to 2 Battalion may be Green and cost 22 points per stand.
• Any Battalion may downgrade Rifled Muskets to Smoothbore Muskets at a cost of -4 points per stand.
• 1 Battalion may be Skirmishers at a cost of 16 points per stand of 2 figures.
1 Unit (2 stands) of Artillery may be included for every Brigade. Artillery may be Medium Smoothbore at a cost of 78 points per stand, Light Smoothbore at a cost of 58 points, Medium Rifled at cost of 108 points per stand or Light Rifled at a cost of 90 points per stand, or a mixture of the four types.
1 Unit of Cavalry consisting of between 4 and 6 bases may be included, using one of the following options:
• Regular Light Cavalry (may skirmish) at 24 points per base
• Veteran Shock Cavalry at 31 points per base
• Regular Cavalry with rifled carbines at 44 points (may dismount).
